How to Care for Gold-Plated Jewellery

Gold-plated jewellery can add a small detail to an everyday outfit. A gentle care routine helps you look after its finish, crystals and fittings. Start with the instructions for your particular piece: the base metal, plating and decorative details can need different care. This guide explains practical habits for wearing, cleaning and storing jewellery, and the product details to compare when you shop.

What does anti-tarnish jewellery mean?

Anti-tarnish describes a product’s resistance to tarnishing; it does not make every item waterproof or guarantee that its finish will stay unchanged forever. Check the stated base metal and finish on the product page. A gold-tone appearance alone does not identify the metal underneath. If a material or water-resistance claim is not listed, contact us before ordering rather than assuming it applies to the whole collection.

Wear your jewellery with care

Put on jewellery after applying perfume, lotion or hair products, and let those products dry first. Remove pieces before swimming, bathing, cleaning or exercise unless the product’s own care instructions explicitly allow those uses. Treat crystals, pearl-style details and decorative coatings gently. For an adjustable open bracelet, change the fit carefully and avoid repeatedly bending the same point back and forth.

Clean gently after wearing

Use a clean, soft, dry cloth to gently wipe away surface marks after wear. Avoid abrasive cloths, metal polish and strong cleaning solutions on plated surfaces. Do not soak jewellery or use an ultrasonic cleaner unless the manufacturer’s instructions say it is suitable. Let each piece dry fully before storage; trapped moisture and residues can affect finishes and decorative parts.

Store pieces separately

Keep jewellery in a dry place, away from a humid bathroom or direct sunlight. Separate pieces in small pouches or compartments so chains do not knot and hard edges do not rub against other finishes. Close clasps before putting necklaces away. Choose a storage box with enough space for the pieces you own, and remember that jewellery shown in an organiser photograph is included only when the listing says so.
